Eyes wide open without seeing. Food for others. |
Calf EyesOne October day I saw a bull standing over this calf that was lying down. A number of cows stood nearby. It looked strange and so I walked over to check on it. The calf had died but only a short time ago, the eyes seemed still to hold some bit of life in them but would soon gray over. In the country dead animals are a common enough sight that after a while they do not shock. The roads are littered with deer, raccoons and porcupines that failed their night crossings. Casualties in the fields, like this calf, soon become the food of eagles, ravens and coyotes.
