These scenes are at a beaver dam in an aspen grove along Highway 89, North of Custer, SD in the Black Hills National Forest. They are the beginning of a new series exploring the visual imagery of this single beaver pond as it changes over the years. In the first year there was one pond. In the second year (2010) the beaver built a number of additional dams. The grove is changing dramatically under the impact of the beaver. In 2011 the beaver continued its construction and added about five additional dams.

Recent visits to this site show destruction to the various dams by humans.

The first self-portrait (fkb1282 to right) for this series seemed too stern, at least to my friends. I tend to smile a lot and so I wanted to see if I could do something more serious.
Accepting that others just want the smile I did fkb1311. I wanted something a bit more friendly, especially for the studio, so I suppose the smile is acceptable. This is somewhat like a Santa piece and thus includes Sidekick. Also a formal pants with red stripe down the side symbolizing Christmas and Santa. This took a long time, started 2009 and finished 2011. The main difference between the two shown above (center and right) was the change in the roses from pink to white and the addition of the rose at the bottom.
